Hornets Winter Development Program (WDP) 2009-2010
Provide your competitive soccer players the opportunity to take their technical skill sets to the next level and forever enhance their enjoyment of the “beautiful game” by enrolling them in the Gloucester Hornets Winter Development Program (WDP) in conjunction with the School of Soccer Brilliance.
The Coaching Team
The WDP program will be run under the watchful and caring eye of Gloucester Technical Director, Mike Lanos, a National licensed coach, former professional player, and holder of a Master’s Degree in Childhood Education. Technical Staff and Squad coaches will assist in running the program, many of whom have professionally playing credentials, together with long distinguished coaching credentials. Our Junior Technical coaches are also amongst the most technically gifted players in the city, having all been developed here at Gloucester over the years. Suffice is to say that the quality of our coach-educators will be second to none in the City of Ottawa.
The Winter Development Program
The 2009-2010 WDP has been designed for competitive soccer players taking into consideration the realities of the Canadian sports environment and the needs of multi-sports athletes. Simply put, at Gloucester we are looking to meet and exceed the needs of multi-sport athletes who want to continue to excel and develop in the sport of soccer while exploring the many other sporting activities available to them throughout their youth. At the same time our design is flexible in allowing the single sport athlete opportunities to focus solely in on his or her chosen sport where that athlete has made a decision to do so.
It is also vital to note that the structure of all our programs going forward will be made in conjunction with and in reference to the Long Term Athlete Development model (LTAD), a developmental framework that takes into consideration the physical, mental, emotional and cognitive states of children at different points in their development. With that said the core of our WDP program from ages 9 and up is as follows:
- One weekly 90 minute technical turf session at our world class Super Dome facility.
- One weekly 60 to 90 minute gym session that will focus on “street soccer” and “Futsal”. While we encourage all WDP participants to make these sessions they will not be mandatory in recognition of the fact other sports take precedence for many players during the winter.
- Optional participation at various age groups in the Ottawa Indoor Coliseum league.
- Optional small sided and full field “friendlies” arranged by Staff coaches.
- WDP T-shirts will be provided and all players will be asked to wear black shorts
Cost for the WDP program: $275
Goalkeeping Academy
Our GK Academy will be run this winter under the direction of every child’s favorite provincially certified goalkeeping coach, “Razor” Ray Martel, together with Chairman Ralph Ehlebracht and his over 25 years of professional goalkeeping experience. Needless to say, our Goalkeeping Academy will be second to none in the province.
Sessions will run on Sundays at the Gloucester Dome: 10 am – 11:45 am (with formal instruction starting at 10:15 am) and will cost $200
Academy Programs U7/U8
New to Gloucester this year will be our Youth Academy Programs, aimed specifically for boys and girls aged 7 and 8 who are keen to take their new found passion for the game to the next level with an advanced curriculum designed by our Technical Director. These sessions are meant to act as a supplement to recreational play and will not include a formal game component, instead focusing on technique and a variety of small sided games that will prove to be most enjoyable for all involved.
Players will be invited to Academy evaluation sessions and interested parents can send an email directly to our Technical Director at mlanos@rogers.com
Sessions will run on Sundays at the Gloucester Dome: 10 am – 11 am and will cost $200.
Player Placement Process
For all WDP training and league play, players will be grouped according to developmental level to the best of our ability. The Gloucester Hornets have put in place an ongoing, sustainable evaluation process all of players that is supported and utilized by the coaching staff at all levels of play. As such, the following factors are used in the selection of players for our competitive teams at Gloucester and for placement in our WDP programs:
- Past performance
- Past Assessments
- Fall Assessments – In advance of the start of WDP, participants may be asked to attend player assessment sessions at specific age groups where a variety of assessments (technical, tactical, physical) will be utilized to best place the player for developmental purposes. Most of these sessions will take place in late September to early October.
- Please note that players may be moved during the WDP as assessments are ongoing.
