School of Soccer Brilliance Returns!

Have your children embark upon their journey towards earning a Masters Degree in soccer brilliance by enrolling them in the Gloucester Hornets School of Soccer Brilliance this fall and winter. The Gloucester Hornets are pleased to offer 4 FREE fall sessions of soccer education under the watchful and caring eye of Gloucester Hornets Technical Director, Mike Lanos – a National licensed coach, former professional player and school teacher who holds a Masters Degree in Childhood Education.

The School of Soccer Brilliance will focus on:

Deceptive dribbling techniques and legendary 1 v 1 moves
How to “master” the ball
How to properly maintain possession in tight spaces and at speed
How to pass and receive the ball properly
How to kick the ball harder, longer, faster and more accurately
What proper soccer “body shape” means and why it is so important

The program will run in two phases:

PHASE I: 4 FREE Fall Sessions

4 weeks of sessions at our world class Hornets Nest soccer facility. These sessions will run (weather permitting) on Saturdays on the following dates: September 11, 18, 25 and October 2, 2010.

Please be advised that the 4 week fall curriculum is designed for players from ages 6 to 11.

PHASE II: Winter Development Program

15 weeks of competitive indoor training at the Gloucester Super Dome starting in October 2010. These sessions are designed with the multi-sport athlete in mind.

Please be advised that the Winter Development Programs are designed for players from ages 5 to 21.

Whom is this School Curriculum aimed at?

Part of the beauty of this game is that it can be played by just about everyone at any level of play. With that said, our expectations on a Saturday morning is that we will be greeted by focused and dedicated young athletes who want to be there to learn and take their games to the next level.

As such, our School of Soccer Brilliance, while very inclusive, is aimed at those youth soccer players who ready and willing to learn. Simply put, we want players who want to be there! Generally this will mean that they are already playing at a competitive level or may be giving consideration to the notion of starting to play competitively sometime in the future.

PHASE I: Groupings and Times

All of our sessions will run between 9 am and noon on the dates listed above (weather permitting). The times below are preliminary in nature and subject to change as we get a better idea as to our numbers at each age level. As such, it is KEY that you provide proper contact email addresses (that you check daily) so that we can keep you apprised of changes post – registration. Please note that the age groupings are the level your child will be playing at in the 2011 summer season.

U7 and U8 Boys and Girls (2004 and 2003 birthdates): 9 am – 10am
U9 and U10 Boys and Girls (2002 and 2001 birthdates): 10 am – 11am
U11 and U12 Boys and Girls (2000 and 1999 birthdates): 11am – Noon
Goalkeepers: 11am – Noon

PHASE II: Winter Development Program

The Winter Development Program includes 15 weeks of competitive indoor training designed for the multi-sport athlete. Program details will be posted in September on the Gloucester Hornets website at gloucesterhornets.ca.

Gloucester U14 L3 Boys Play for Aunt Deb!

The Hornets Nest was abuzz this past weekend with the usual flood of young boys’ soccer players at the annual Gloucester International Soccer Tournament, but this year’s edition was missing one thing that just about every east-end soccer family was used to seeing at the Blackburn Hamlet soccer fields.

Debbie Gulliver wasn’t there to run the canteen, having been recently released from hospital after a long stay that ended with her losing a leg below the knee – the result of an infection she wasn’t able to fight off due to diabetes.

“She’s been there every single day from Day 1 – never missed a day,” notes Hornets club manager Cindy Cornfield. “Everyone keeps asking where she is. We’re telling them what’s happened and they have a sort of blank expression on their face, thinking, ‘No, that’s not true.’

“We’re a little flustered on how it could happen to her. For diabetes to be something that we think is such a treatable thing, to turn around and lose your leg because of it seems so surreal. It makes you realize how poisonous diabetes actually is.”

The Hornets have set up an online fund to help the self-employed Gulliver with her financial obligations. Cornfield says now is the time to step up and help Gulliver, who volunteers much of her time at the canteen and is known as “Aunt Deb” for her caring nature.

“If a kid came back from a bad game, she’d say, ‘Oh, don’t worry. Aunt Deb’s gonna make it all better – here’s a free lolli,’” Cornfield describes. “She just gives and gives and gives and would never ask for a thing. She’s really committed, she’s always been there for us, and we need to be really committed back to her.”

The Hornets certainly did Aunt Deb proud as they won five division titles at the July 3-4 tournament.

The Gloucester under-14 Level 3 team played up in the U15 Tier 1 competition and wound up beating the Shamrocks de Deux Montagnes 4-1 in the division final to avenge a preliminary-round loss to the same opponents.

The Hornets Predators captured the U12 Tier 1 crown with a 1-0 win over Capital United, while Gloucester downed Ottawa South 2-1 to win the U16 Tier 1 division.

The Hornets prevailed in the U10 Tier 2 competition as well as the U18 Tier 2 event where the Gloucester U17 squad beat Cumberland’s U17 team 3-0 in the final.

The Cumberland Cobras beat Glengarry 1-0 to take the U15 Tier 2 title, and were also runners-up in U18 Tier 1, while Gloucester placed second in the U12 and U13 Tier 2 competitions.

A total of 88 teams attended the tournament, which is 20 fewer than last season – a decrease organizers attribute to Canada Day’s proximity to the weekend for this year’s event. They’re expecting better numbers for their girls’ tournament Aug. 7-8.

U10 Hornets Boys Nike Challenge Cup Runners-Up!

Despite being short a player for the whole tournament, and temperatures almost reaching 40 Degrees, and playing with the smallest nets you’ve seen, the team had a blast and earned their way to the Final game. This being the 4th and final tournament for the team, they were eager to make an impact, and show the Western side of Ottawa how well soccer is played in the East.
The Spitfires started off the tournament with a 1-0 win against West Ottawa. Even though the score didn’t reflect it, the boys outplayed their opponents the whole game.
Gloucester then went on to face OSU Rage who tops the standings in the Western Ottawa league. OSU went up 1-0 in the first half, but at kick-off of the second half, Nolan Laskoski ripped a bullet of a shot of the inside of a post and in to tie it up. The game finished at a 1-1 draw, but we would see the OSU Rage again in the final game.
By the time the third game of the day came around, the boys were getting tired, and unfortunately lost 3-0 to Ottawa Internationals Black.
Day 2 of the tournament started off with a match against another of the host teams OSU Titans. Both teams came out firing on all cylinders, looking for a place in the playoffs. The game ended with another 1-1 tie, but the score could have been much higher (for both teams).
Thanks to an upset in the very last round-robin game, the Spitfires finished 4th in the group and advanced to the semi-final. This was a very exciting moment for the team, as 2 of the 3 previous tournaments they missed the playoffs due to goals for/against differentials.
The Spitfires faced Lanark County who had gone undefeated in the round robin. Both teams had their chances, but the Spitfires had something to prove, and wanted the ball more than the other team. Some very dominate passing plays led to the game-winning goal by Taylor, and a penalty shot by Jacob insured the 2-0 win.
There wasn’t much of a break between the semi and the final because the semi got off to a very late start. Again, the Spitfires met the OSU Rage for a rubber-match. Both teams played like champions who deserved to be in the final game. OSU hadn’t forgot the tying goal scored by Nolan during the RR, and they got the exact same goal in the first half. There were chances at both ends, with Nolan making some great saves, including several 2 person breakaways, to give us a fighting chance. Opportunities happened at both ends, and had the nets been bigger, there would have been more goals, but the final score was 1-0.
The boys deserved their spot in the final, and can rest assured they won a place in the heart of their coach.
Way to go spitfires! Put that Silver next to your Bronze from the Cumberland Snakebite!

U9s Take Silver at Snakebite Tourney!

In their first tournament together the U9 boys came together in fine style to land the silver medal. The tournament did not start too well with a closely fought 3-2 defeat to Cumberland. Things did not look good at this stage as we were next up against undefeated Glengarry who in league play had yet to concede a goal! Nevertheless the Hornets came out determined and raced to a 2-0 lead. From then on it was a backs to the wall cling on to what we had job and we squeezed out a 2-1 win, thanks to great defensive work by Ali, Connor, Ivan, Ben and Drew. This left us in good shape, knowing that a win in our final group game would likely see us advancing.

The boys came out firing on all cylinders and raced to a comfortable 7-1 win, with some beautiful passing and team play (a bit like Germany was doing to England at about that time!). Great attacking play and goal scoring was on display especially from Cam, Stephen, Shelton, Sean and Ethan. So on to the semis, although we had to face the all conquering West Carleton Talons who like Glengarry were 5 and 0 in league play and 3 and 0 in the tournoi with a scary +25 goal difference. This was irrelevant to the Hornets however who again were fast starters racing to a 3-0 advantage. The Talons though clawed their way back and tied things up at 3-3 midway through the second half. The Hornets however were soon buzzing again and swarming the Talons net resulted in a free kick on the edge of the box. Jabulani ball or not Will stepped up and curled an unstoppable shot into the top corner, 4-3 to the Hornets and once again with the incredible goalkeeping of Mikey we hung on for a place in the final where “lucky loser” Glengarry awaited. The boys fought hard in the final scoring the first and last goals, but Glengarry snuck in five lucky ones in between so the Hornets had to settle for silver. All the boys were rightfully very proud of this achievement; the coaches too, as at the U9 level, the Hornets are fielding 3 balanced boy’s teams where it is all about development and playing the game the right way (so nothing like England or Derby County – right boys!?).

As above but with the positive addition of Coach Rania and the usual losses due to birthdays, baptisms and flights to Edmonton!!?

GH U-16GL3 – Silver Medalist at Laval tournament

The GH U-16GL3 team, coaches Michael Dussah and Denis Silva, is proud to annonce their winning of the silver medal (U-16AA division) at the Laval Tournament, weekend of June 26-27. We congratulate all the players on the team for their effort in this tournament, showing a record of 4 wins in a row, to be defeated only in the final game.

GLOUCESTER HORNETS U11 PLAYER TO PLAY IN SOUTH AFRICA WORLD CUP 2010

Are you surprised?

10 young local soccer players (including a Gloucester U11 Premier Player) are about to embark on an experience of a lifetime. They will be representing their school and Canada in the inaugural International French Schools World Cup (FSWC at www.scolafrance.info/foot2010/index.php), a Mini-field World Cup with 26 countries representing four continents. The Ottawa players, eight boys and two girls, attend Lycée Claudel school in Ottawa, and are in grade five and grade six.

The tournament will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa from June 21 to June 27, during the World Cup. The students will participate in multiple activities over 7 full days, all of which will fulfill one of three objectives: sporting, cultural and educational.

From a sporting perspective, each team will play a minimum of four games before advancing to knockout rounds. A total of 100 matches will be played. The Lycée Claudel team will also be attending at least two World Cup games in Johannesburg, Spain vs. Honduras and Germany vs. Ghana. To experience World Cup final games live in huge stadiums including the new Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg will be a dream come true for any soccer fan. The students will also meet a national soccer team of the FIFA World Cup, and be inspired by an internationally-renowned player.

The field of sport becomes a backdrop for the cultural exchange. Where else could youths from Casablanca, Douala, Kuala Lumpur, Maputo, Oslo, Ottawa and Soweto all speak the same language to each other – that of soccer. Students from around the world are sharing a common bond, their passion for the game, while being exposed to cultural and social diversity. They are being billeted by families in Johannesburg, they have exchanged profiles of themselves, they will be talking about their own country at the World Cup village, and will hopefully continue their dialogue with their new friends from different continents, after they return home.

The students at the Lycée have also been studying South African history from Apartheid to the birth of the Rainbow Nation and will be privy to a personal tour of Soweto. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the students have been studying civil, economic, social and cultural rights of the child, and how they differ in different countries. They will participate in a full day debate in an International Youth Parliament.

To enhance their South African experience, the Lycée Claudel team has been collecting “gently used soccer equipment”. Collection is still ongoing and Hornets players and teams are encouraged to participate. The team will meet with children in Soweto and provide them with the equipment and uniforms. It will be a moment that the Ottawa kids will never forget.

The students about to embark on this trip of a lifetime experience are: Maxime Nectoux (Gloucester Hornets), Braxton Lagarec, Julia Hassard, Alexandre Dinh, Liam Harb, Loic Bramley, Catherine Guevin-Nicoloff, Matteo Cantave, Maxime Gioakas-Perusse, and Marcello Britto.

They represent Gloucester Hornets, Ottawa Internationals, Ottawa Fury, OSU and Hull soccer clubs. The team is coached by Gilles Boumard, Athletic Director at Lycée Claudel. They leave June 19 and will be back June 28. You can follow their adventures on their blog at Claudel2010.wordpress.com. This may not be the real World Cup but it surely feels like it … And our own Maxime Nectoux will be there!
